I love writing ekphrastic poems and was thrilled that The Ekphrastic Review selected this amazing painting, “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso (1937) shortly after I visited the painting at La Reina Sofia art museum in Madrid. My poem was published in Dec 2022.

Mum’s Birthday
My sister and I are watching the sun crest over
El Puente Nuevo in Ronda. The camarero
delivers two sparkling drinks
then preps for lunch service. It has become ritual,
each year, in a different place, we raise a glass
to the mother she barely knew. Already,
she is planning where we will go for Mum’s 100th.
I smile. The icy gin and tonic freezes
my throat.
